Why Children Should Play Memory Games

We all know that memory games are fun and children are usually really good at them. – My kids beat me every time! But did you know that memory games are considered one of the best ways to make sure our brains are working to their max?

It’s true! Studies have found that these types of games increase kids’ cognitive development, attention, reading performance and more. But aside from keeping the brain sharp, memory games have other benefits, for example:

1. Matching games improve concentration, language, and you know, memory. Studies have shown a link between working memory and dyslexia. We need to remember each sound, put them together, and learn what they look like in order to learn new words. And what do we need to be able to do all of that hard work? A good working memory.

2. Learning matching skills is extremely important for young children. When children have a habit of playing memory or matching games, they will be better equipped to match letters and sounds when they reach Pre-K or Kindergarten. Besides, matching items and explaining why they go together is important for cognitive skills and abilities.

3. Two words: visual discrimination. To tell whether words or letters are the same or different, children need to use their matching skills. Playing memory games with pictures, shapes, and letters will help children as they learn to recognize letters and words.

And last but not least…

4. It creates bonding. Yes, it is great and so so important to exercise our brains as children and adults. However, playing memory games also creates bonding. Whether children play with peers or with an adult, these types of games allow the players to spend quality time together in a fun, stress-free way.

As we can see, memory games are the bomb! So, go indulge yourself and your kids with some memory game time. And since Thanksgiving is right around the corner, how about a Thanksgiving Memory Game Freebie? Let me know what you think in the comments.
